A cognitive architecture theory of anticipatory thinking

نویسندگان

چکیده

We theorize that anticipatory thinking (AT) uses the same computational infrastructure as general cognition described in Common Model of Cognition. extend with results from research on event cognition. Using these building blocks, we present a five-step process model AT realized cognitive architecture components. then revisit simplifying assumptions underlying our and expand theory response. Finally, make predictions are entailed by account AT, focusing how limits both natural artificial systems can impact support for AT.

Optimality Theory as a General Cognitive Architecture

It was exactly 25 years ago that Paul Smolensky introduced Harmony Theory (Smolensky, 1986), a framework that would pursue an exciting, but certainly not straight path through linguistics (namely, Optimality Theory) and other cognitive domains. The goal of this workshop is not so much to look back to this path, but rather to discuss its potential continuation(s). Soon after its publication, Opt...

Combining Optimality Theory and a Cognitive Architecture

Optimality Theory (OT) has had a lot of attention from the linguistics research community but also still largely lacks cognitive grounding. We used the ACT-R cognitive architecture to gain greater insight into the cognitive grounding issues that OT needs to address, most notably the GEN process and the learning of the constraint ranking. A generic ACT-R 5.0 model was developed guided by OT prin...

Creation of Anticipatory Information Support for Virtual Organizations between System(S) Theory and System Thinking

A requisitely holistic information support can help us improve our business operation, but such information is hard to attain and even harder to attain in virtual organizations presenting a specific, more fluid form of business systems. Important difficulties include complexity and complicatedness, time (real and future, and their difference from the past), information requirements (realistic d...

A Cognitive Architecture Theory of Comprehension and Appraisal

Current computational appraisal models do not include comprehensive theories for the origins of appraisals – why and how are they generated? We argue that an agent is constantly engaged in comprehension as it strives to make sense of its place in the world. Our hypothesis is that many appraisals are inherent to the comprehension process. We present a model for the comprehension process and desc...

Extensions to a Unified Theory of the Cognitive Architecture

Building computational models of human problem solving has been a longstanding goal in Artificial Intelligence research. The theories of cognitive architectures addressed this issue by embedding models of problem solving within them. This thesis presents an extended account of human problem solving and describes its implementation within one such theory of cognitive architecture—ICARUS. The doc...
